Reflections in the Snow, 2005

Digitally printed cotton and silk, machine pieced and quilted 36” x 38”

I was raised on a family farm near Nebraska City, Nebraska. My experiences in this rural setting have inspired a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. This influence has become an essential component of my design style. In my work, I focus on issues of balancing harmony and dissonance between abstract digital and natural imagery in order to form a cohesive whole.

At first glance, Reflections in the Snow does not necessarily appear to address difficult subjects. On closer examination, a wide range of influences that might be considered controversial or uncomfortable are revealed, including politics, spirituality, sexuality, and changes over time. While the work contains images that are tied specifically to my personal experiences and identity, viewers are encouraged to make their own connections to broader human experiences that are not normally examined or made apparent on the surfaces of our everyday lives.
