Give and Take: The Artist/Student Dialogue

Give and Take, an exhibition on non-traditional quilts, celebrates the teacher and student relationship among quilt artists. The work of a group of professional quilt artists is paired with the work of their students. This national show, sponsored by the International Quilt Study Center with support from the Lincoln Arts Council, recognizes the contribution of Quilt Surface Design Symposium of Columbus, Ohio, which sponsors annual educational programs fro non-traditional quilters.

Thursday, February 15, 2007, 5:30 p.m.: Lecture by Michael James, "QSDS: Incubating the Innovative Quilt."

By the mid 20th century, American designers infiltrated the French dominated fashion world. This exhibition features the simple elegance of mavericks including Norman Norell, James Galanos and Claire McCardell, as well as Cashin. The exhibition is in collaboration with Iowa State University and showcases garments from the historic collections of both universities.

Small Expressions 2007

Small Expressions is an annual international, juried exhibit featuring high quality contemporary small-scale fiber art works. The Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., sponsors Small Expressions to showcase fiber art of a smallscale not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction. Wednesday, June 20: Closing reception.

Recycling and Resourcefulness: Quilts of the 1930s

Recycling and Resourcefulness: Quilts of the 1930s explores the many influences on quiltmaking during the Great Depression. In particular, it looks at how women managed to make beautiful quilts during these difficult economic times, sometimes with the imaginative reuse of feed, sugar, and grain sacks. Recycling and Resourcefulness is curated from the collections of the International Quilt Study Center by Christina Brooks, gradaute student in the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design, and is supported by the Nebraska Humanities Council.

Unfurled: Expressive Cloth

Ten artists show their adaptations of traditional and experimental fiber dyeing techniques that range from Indonesian batik and Japanese shibori to contemporary digital applications.

Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles

"Making the Meaning: Globalization and Labor in Textiles,” an exhibition that features new works by eight contemporary artist/designers: Elizabeth Andrews, Andrew Boettger, Karen DeCristoforo, Jennifer Graham, Megan McGhee, Mary Pattavina, Jagdeep Singh, and Stacey Skold. The exhibition opens on Dec. 3 and runs through Jan. 11, 2008. A public reception with the artists providing brief remarks about the work will be Dec. 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. All activities are free and open to the public.
